This Iceland Photo Tour is a once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph the nature and landscapes of one the most spectacular countries in the world. Unforgettable sunrises and sunsets, black sand beaches, icebergs dotted along distant shorelines and waterfalls await to be captured by any landscape photography lover.
Guided by Gregg Kerber and Sergio Lanza, we are offering a photo tour planned to enjoy nature and landscape photography at its best. Our journey will take us throughout the country while we plan our days chasing the most beautiful moments of light: dawn, dusk and golden hours. Nighttime photography will also be on our agenda as we hope to be lucky enough to capture the magical Aurora Borealis, a wonderful phenomenon that we will be searching for throughout our stay. Sadly, we can never know when the Aurora Borealis will actually be present, however we have planned this tour during one of the periods where we have the best chances to experience it.
Our photo tour is suited for all ages and experience levels. Most locations are easily accessible for all physical conditions to join and no minimum photo experience is required. Our photography guides will be on hand to assist and answer any photography questions you might have so that you can achieve the best images possible. We look forward to being able to share with you one of our favorite destinations where you’ll leave with incredible images and memories that will last a lifetime.
Our journey begins with our group meeting at Keflavik airport where we will head to Grundarfjördur, a quaint town in Snæfellsnes where Kirkjufell is one of the most famous mountains in Iceland. This will be our destination for the following two nights. The drive to our destination will be two or three hours long with fantastic views from the road where we will have many opportunities to stop and take photos along the way.
Once we get to our accommodations, we’ll be photographing the sunset from the Kirkjufell mountain area and be prepared to shoot that evening in case we are lucky enough to see the Northern Lights.
We will spend the whole day in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula where we’ll visit some of the most beautiful locations in the area such as the Black Church in Budhir as well as the southern coast villages and the Kirkjufell mountain waterfalls.
Next, we’ll make our way to Arnarstapi, one of the many beautiful villages on this peninsula where we will be able to photograph seascapes and a famous rock formation known as Gaklettur. The walk by the coastline of this area is surrounded by stunning cliffs and rock formations which make for beautiful views.
Just south of the peninsula lies the Londrangar coastline where we will spend some time photographing the striking cliffs with pinnacles that reach up to 75 meters high. This area will be an ideal setting to photograph seascapes and practice using neutral density filters in order to get different visual effects depending on exposure time.
In the middle of all this rugged natural area are a few beautiful villages by the sea we will also visit called Hellnar and Budhir. The Black Church by Budhir will be a great location for our sunset session and if lucky, a perfect spot to capture the northern lights.
After waking up early to capture the sunrise in the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, we will then travel east by the Southern Coast. During this long ride, we will be stopping several times to photograph some of the most iconic places in Iceland including two of the most spectacular waterfalls on the island: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss.
Icelandic waterfalls will be one of the main subjects of many of our photo sessions. We will be sure to give you plenty of tips on how to capture them in all their splendor like playing with neutral density filters in order to achieve interesting effects you can only get when shooting on location.
Next, we will be heading to Vik where we will photograph it’s beautiful church as well as the Reynisfjara and Reynisdrangar Black Sand Beaches, which are famous for their incredible basalt columns which make for moody landscape images. We will then use this opportunity to photograph another sunset in this area and be on the lookout again for the Aurora Borealis.
Our morning begins early photographing a sunrise near Vik. After, we’ll continue East to our next destination: Höfn.
On the way, we will have many opportunities to photograph some of the most famous locations on the island which include the mystical church in Hof, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, and Fjallsárlón Glacier. We’ll be stopping by some of these glaciers to walk to the shore of the lagoons that were created from ice, the landscapes here are simply otherworldly.
Upon arrival in Höfn, we will head to the Stokksness Peninsula to capture the sunset with the backdrop of Vestrahörn mountain and where the ocean meets black sand dunes.
Today we’ll spend the day photographing Höfn and its surroundings. We’ll visit Stokksness again, this time for sunrise. After we’ll be able to photograph one of the areas where ‘Game of Thrones’ was filmed including a tiny village nestled into the mountains.
Our journey continues driving West where we’ll enjoy some extraordinary views of the mountains and glaciers to the North. During the drive, there are often reflections in ponds beside the roads that make for wonderful photo opportunities. We may also find some wild Icelandic horses in this area which make for incredible subjects as they gallop freely across the mountainous landscapes.
As evening approaches, we will head back to Stokksness where where we will be photographing the beach that will have reflections of the mountains in it’s shoreline. Again, we will be ready to capture the Northern Lights if they decide to make an apperance from this area next to the sea.
Today we will continue to head West. After capturing a sunrise again near Höfn, we’ll drive around an hour and a half to our next destination in Vatnajökul National Park, our home for the next two days.
We’ll arrive at Yökulsarlon Glacier where we will photograph some glaciers as well as the world famous Diamond Beach, a black sand beach made up of icebergs from glaciers that are moved to the shoreline by waves making it truly a remarkable sight.
Diamond beach is one of the most stunning places for anyone that visits Iceland for the first time. When you see these icebergs, some small, while others bigger than a person or horse, you can’t help but be amazed by such an incredible place. We will play with different exposure times when photographing the icebergs which will allow us to get unique effects from the wave movements.
Yökulsarlon Glacier will be also be a place you’ll never forget as it’s lagoon will allow us to capture stunning images while we enjoy the impressive views of one of Iceland’s most famous locations.
This area will be one of the highlights of our trip. Because of that we will visit during different stages of the day to capture it in all it’s glory. Later in the evening, we will be on the lookout for the Northern Lights in front of one of the glaciers in the area.
After our last sunrise in the Yöjulsarlon Glacier area, we will continue West.
Along the way, we will be visiting the impressive Lomagnupur mountain where we will be able to photograph it’s massive peak reflected in some ponds close to the road.
We will also visit Kvernufoss, one of the most scenic waterfalls if weather permits. To get there we’ll need to do a short and easy hike, but because of this it is considerably less crowded than other falls in the area. We may also be able to get inside a cave under the cliff allowing us to photograph the falls from behind giving us a unique vantage point for photos.
For sunset, we will be visiting the Bruarfoss waterfall which is famous for it’s blue tones. This is one of the smallest waterfalls we’ll see during our trip, but at the same one of the most beautiful.
On the last day of our trip we will begin by photographing Gulfoss waterfall, one of the most famous falls in the Southern Coast. In contrast to Bruarfoss, this is a huge waterfall in the middle of an incredibly vast area where we’ll be able to admire the amazing force of Nature.
Afterwards, we’ll be driving to Keflavik International Airport where unfortunately our journey in this amazing country will come to an end.
